Van Nus Competes in the 10m Air Rifle

WAIS athlete Robyn Van Nus finished 44th in the 10m Air Rifle with the Czech Republic’s Katerina Emmons winning the first gold medal of the Beijing Games.Van Nus: finished 44th

A score of 396 was needed to qualify for the eight person final, but Van Nus fell short with a score of 384.

Emmons, competing in her second Olympic campaign, won the title at the Beijing Shooting Range Hall with an Olympic record of 503.5.

Emmons, the bronze medallist in Athens four years ago, shot 103.5 in the final after averaging a perfect 10 in qualifying, hitting all 40 targets to set an Olympic and world qualification record.

Lioubov Galkina of Russia won the silver medal with 502.1, while Snjezana Pejcic of Croatia took the bronze with 500.9.

Athens gold medalist and China’s homegrown hope Du Li, failed to give China the dream start to the Games that they were hoping for, finishing fifth.

Van Nus will now turn her attention to Thursday’s 50m rifle three positions event.
