Van Nus was unable to qualify for the final in the 10m air rifle

WAIS athlete Robyn Van Nus attributed a slow start to her missing the final of the women’s 10m Air Rifle at the London Olympic Games one Saturday.

Van Nus finished 45th of 56 competitors in qualifying after posting a score of 391 at the Royal Artillery Barracks, with fellow Australian Alethea Sedgman (387) finishing 52nd.

“My start was not the best,” Van Nus confirmed following competition.

“I started today nervous, and then I went for a little bit of a walk and gathered myself. I came back better after that, and I finished well. I was happy with that.

“It doesn’t help to be nervous in a sport like shooting, but it was still exciting and enjoyable to compete. Looking at the results, I would next have had to shoot a personal best-score to make the final, but this is not my best event. I’m competing in the 50m rifle 3 positions next Saturday, and I’m a lot better in that.

The gold medal was taken by China’s Siling Yi, with Poland’s Sylwia Bogacka winning silver and China’s Dan Yu bronze.

Competing in her second Olympic campaign for Australia, Van Nus was complementary f her Australian counterpart.

“I think Alethea was pretty happy with the way she went,” Van Nus said. “She’s pretty young, and it’s her first Olympics, so it’s going to be great in terms of experience for her.”
