WA Claim Dual Bronze at U21 Australian Hockey Championships

Published On: 17 July 2019

Western Australia has
won bronze medals in both the men’s and women’s tournaments at the U21
Australian Hockey Championships in Lismore, NSW.

Both victories came against South Australia, with the women
edging a tight match 1-0, before the WA men produced a clinical performance to
record a 4-0 victory in their third place play-off.

Earlier, both teams had had their title hopes ended at the
semi-final stage, with the women exiting via a one goal defeat (2-1) against Victoria,
whilst the same state opponent thwarted the men’s side, via a thrilling 5-4
match.

With a medal still up for grabs, WA ensured they would not
leave Lismore empty-handed, with a 26th minute goal to Ciara
Faichney settling the decider for the WA women’s team.

The WA men earned their victory with Tom Harvie – the younger
brother of Kookaburra representative Jake Harvie – scoring a brace either side
of quarter time, before Denver Farmer and William Battistessa rounded out a 4-0
win.

The third ranking mirrors the effort of the WA men’s 2018
campaign, whilst for the WA women’s team, the bronze medal represents a significant
step up from 2018’s seventh place finish.
