Three National Centre of Excellence – Perth gymnasts recently competed at the 2018 Australian Classic on the Gold Coast.

Sidney Stephens, Grace Barry and Clara Kolm were all in action, with Stephens and Kolm both returning podium performances in the Junior International category which underpins the senior elite.

Stephens earned a silver medal in the Uneven Bars and was also a bronze medallist in the All-Around following a consistent showcase of performances across all four apparatus.

Her Bars score of 25.350 was bested only by specialist Isla Ross, who took gold with 25.900. Stephens AA score of 97.832 saw her ranked behind Kate Sayer (102.816) and Tiana Odessa (100.066).

Kolm earned herself a bronze medal with a fine performance on Balance Beam, with the 14 year-old returning a score of 24.200.

Grace Barry managed an eighth ranked AA score of 91.016 despite missing a score on Vault. The talented youngster was particularly strong on Bars, fetching the sixth highest total of 22.550.

Stephens’ performances have earned her re-selection for the Australian National Junior Squad for the next 12 months with the 15 year-old currently attending a training camp in Canberra, where the juniors will be amongst the senior team, who are attending their final selection camp ahead of the 2018 Gymnastics World Championships.

NCE Perth head coach Coral King said it was an amazing opportunity for Stephens to experience and learn from the elite girls, particularly at such an important preparatory moment ahead of their selections.
