WA Gymnasts Warm up for Nationals with State Titles Competition

The state’s best gymnasts enjoyed the opportunity for a top level tune-up ahead of the 2019 Australian Gymnastics Championships with a hit-out at the WA State titles in Perth.

In the women’s artistic competition, the senior international state title went to Sophie Mahoney who combined an All Around total of 38.500.

Sidney Stephens competed on Vault and Floor to accrue 23.800 points as she prepares to push for selection on the Australian team ahead of this year’s World Championships.

Stephens top scored on both apparatus she contested, scoring 12.250 on Vault and fetching 11.550 on Floor.

The 16 year-old recently competed at the Gymnix meet in Canada, which represented her senior international debut. In doing so, she became the first Australian women’s athlete to compete at senior international level at a major international meet since the establishment of the National Centre of Excellence in Perth.

She will be vying against some of Australia’s most experienced WAG athletes at the National Championships in Melbourne when the titles commence from May 20.

Another young WA star in Olena Edmeades produced a highly impressive performance in winning the Junior International state title, with an All Around score of 46.000.

Edmeades was particularly strong on Vault, scoring an eye-catching 13.050. At just 12 years of age, she is quickly establishing as the state’s most exciting proponent on the apparatus since Olympian Emily Little – who won numerous international medals at World Cup level on the same discipline.

Eva Kierath maintained her dominance over trampoline gymnastics in WA, winning the women’s senior international title with a score of 53.170.
