WA Trio Named in Kookaburras’ Champions Trophy Squad

A trio of Western Australian athletes have been listed for the Kookaburras’ Champions Trophy squad for the tournament in London, from June 10-17.

Goal keeper Tyler Lovell, midfielder Aran Zalewski and striker Trent Mitton were all named in the national squad – which is missing several senior players – as coach Graham Reid uses the opportunity to test the depth and diversity of his squad.

“The Champions Trophy is being used to manage the load of a number of our players, and to provide the last opportunity for other players vying for Olympic selection.”

“The objective of 2016 has been to get as many players as possible up to the level where they are in the mix for the team going to Rio,” Reid said.

Australia starts its campaign with a clash against hosts Great Britain, before facing; Korea, Germany, Belgium and India.

With stars such as captain Mark Knowles, games record holder Jamie Dwyer and WA dual Olympian Fergus Kavanagh rested, it’s an opportunity for the extended squad to press their claims for Olympic selection, ahead of August’s Games in Rio.

Mitton is the most experienced of the WA trio, having played 88 times for his country, whilst Zalewski (86 caps) and Lovell (66 caps) have both been regular members of the Kookaburras set up over the past four years.
