Earlier this week four young WAIS athletes were awarded scholarships from the Carbine Club of Western Australia to assist them in covering the significant costs associated with international competition in their respective sports.
Kye Bonsor, Chris Charlwood, Damian Williams and Dayna O’Leary were granted these scholarships following their recent selection in national squads and teams.
Cyclist Kye Bonsor is the youngest of the four scholarship recipients.
A current member of the World Championship long team, Kye is also set to make his international debut later this year when he competes in the Junior Track World Championships in China in August.
WAIS sailor Chris Charlwood is an experienced sailor in the 470 class.
He recently earned selection for the World Junior Championships in Japan in August.
Facing costs of more than $10K to get both himself and his equipment to Japan, the Carbine Club scholarship will provide invaluable help as Charlwood prepares to represent his country.
In addition to competitive sailing Chris also coaches junior athletes in his spare time.
19-year-old Damian Williams has been selected as a member of the Australian Men’s Junior Water Polo Squad.
This squad will travel to Belgrade, Serbia, in August to compete in the World Championships.
Williams, who is a goalkeeper in his sport, has worked hard to balance his water polo commitments with full-time study.
The final scholarship recipient is Dayna O’Leary who was selected as a member of the Australian Women’s Junior World Championships Water Polo team, set to compete in Volos, Greece in September.
At just 19-years of age O’Leary recently made her senior international debut, competing with the Australian Stingers.
Dayna studies Commerce part-time at the University of Western Australia alongside her sporting commitments.
Many thanks go to the Carbine Club of Western Australia for their generous and on-going support of WAIS athletes.
