WAIS athletes have been recognised for their excellence in sport at the 2015 edition of the WA Sports Star of the Year Awards held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre on Monday night.
WAIS scholarship athlete Tamsin Cook claimed the Junior Athlete of the Year prize, to go with the same title she won at WAIS Awards last October, following a 2015 campaign that saw her win junior world championship titles, whilst breaking age-world records in the process.
WAIS Athletes of the Year – Caitlin Bassett (netball) and Melissa Hoskins (cycling) were edged for the top award on the night, with Fremantle Dockers footballer and 2015 Browlow medallist Nat Fyfe – adding the WA Sports Star of the Year title to a steadily growing personal trophy cabinet.
The trio highlighted a stellar field of finalists that also encompassed WAIS scholarship athletes; Brianna Throssell, (swimming) who was a finalist in the 200m fly in her senior world championship debut, water polo athletes Zoe Arancini and Aaron Younger, who both earned FINA World All Star recognition for their efforts at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Russia, world championship winning wheelchair racer Madison de Rozario, world number one ranked men’s laser sailor Matt Wearn and World Championship winning netballer Natalie Medhurst.
The Perth Scorchers were crowned team of the year, for winning a second consecutive Big Bash league title, whilst coach Justin Langer earned the Coach of the Year title for his efforts across Western Australian cricket.
Voting was based on the eligibility period from December 1, 2014, to November 30, 2015.
