WAIS Athletes Selected for National Development Squads

A number of Western Australian athletes were announced as members of Hockey Australia’s National Development Squads on Wednesday as a result of their performances so far this year.

Those athletes selected for the women’s squad were Kyra Flynn, Aleisha Power and Penny Squibb whilst both Matthew Bird and Jake Harvie were selected for the men’s squad.

Having previously been identified as having potential to represent hockey at the national level, further assessment of these athletes led to their selection upon their respective squads.

Hockey Australia’s High Performance Director, Toni Cumpston said “our national head coaches have selected athletes who we believe have the skills that can be developed to form the next era of our high-performance program senior athletes.”

The women’s squad currently consists of 14 members whilst the men’s squad has 15 members, these numbers however have the potential to increase to 27 following the Australian Hockey League which will take place in September.

The national senior squad and the national development squad for 2018 will be announced at the end of 2017 based on athlete performances throughout 2017.
