WAIS scholarship athletes Lauren Reynolds and Kirsten Dellar have been selected for the 2016 BMX World Championships in Colombia from May 25-29.
The pair form part of a six-strong Australian elite women’s squad that also contains Reynolds’ fellow 2012 London Olympic teammate Caroline Buchanan.
The World Championships are the final Olympic selection event with Australia likely to earn a full complement of Rio quotas, with three men’s and two women’s spots up for grabs.
Australia’s team for the Rio Olympics is scheduled to be named soon after May’s World Championships, sharpening the importance of these titles.
BMX Australia National Coaching Director Anita Wells said that it was very exciting to see an increased number of BMXA Development Academy athletes selected to join their high performance counterparts and sees it as a measure of the success of the Academy’s pathway programs, as well as a celebration of their hard work and achievements.
“We are very happy with the list of riders the national selectors have nominated”. Wells said.
“Riders like Sam and Caroline, along with Anthony Dean, Bodi Turner and Lauren Reynolds, are at the elite end of the sport and have the ability to podium at major international events.”
Wells was also happy to see athletes such as Dellar breaking into the national set up.
“That shows the success of the framework we have created and how well these riders are working within the pathway.”
