The Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) has announced that lacrosse will transition from an Individual Athlete Program to a WAIS Sport Program, reinforcing its commitment to supporting the sport ahead of its inclusion at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The new program will provide scholarships to 13 athletes, comprising seven men and six women, while also introducing a dedicated WAIS Head Coach – Glenn Morley, to lead the program and drive high-performance outcomes.
The move comes at an exciting time for Australian lacrosse, with both national teams continuing to deliver strong international results. The men’s team recently claimed first place, while the women’s team secured a second-place finish at the 2026 Asia-Pacific Sixes Lacrosse Championships, underlining Australia’s competitiveness on the world stage.
WAIS CEO Matt Fulton said the elevation of lacrosse to a full sport program reflects both the sport’s growing momentum and the opportunity presented by LA28.
“The inclusion of lacrosse at LA28 presents a significant opportunity for our athletes, and this transition demonstrates WAIS’ commitment to helping Western Australian talent perform on the world stage.”
With Olympic qualification events scheduled for next year, the expanded WAIS program will play a key role in preparing athletes to compete for places at LA28.
The program is expected to further strengthen Western Australia’s contribution to Lacrosse Australia, providing athletes with enhanced coaching, support services and a daily training environment as they pursue Olympic success.
