Five Western Australian Institute of Sport cyclists have been selected for the UCI Track World Cup event to be held in Melbourne on November 19-21.

Junior World Champion Luke Durbridge will make only his second appearance in a senior Australian national team, and will be joined by points score world champion Cameron Meyer and omnium champion Josie Tomic.

Making up the WAIS contingent are Sarah Kent and Scott Sunderland, who will compete in the sprint events for Team Jayco.

WAIS Head cycling coach Darryl Benson said the world cup would provide an interesting yardstick for the athletes to determine their early season track form.

“We have five very good riders heading to Melbourne and they will compete against the world’s best. It’s exciting for them to approach competition and put into practice all the hard work spent on the track,” Benson said.

Benson also pointed out that fellow WAIS product Travis Meyer was held from the squad to give him some time following a busy road season that saw him compete through Europe and Asia with the AIS squad.

“Travis has had a huge season. We felt it was better to give him more time ahead of the Beijing leg of the UCI world cup rather than send him to Melbourne now and flog him when he probably needs a couple of weeks,” he said.

Josie Tomic and Scott Sunderland were the only members of the five selected for Melbourne, to compete in the last round of the UCI series in Manchester. Tomic picked up a world cup silver medal in the Individual pursuit, and will likely feature in the event again, with Kent to join her in the teams pursuit.

Cameron Meyer will feature in the points race and could ride the team pursuit where Luke Durbridge will be looking for a call up.

The Melbourne leg of the UCI Track world cup will be held at the Hisense Arena from November 19-21.
