WAIS gymnasts brought home a collection of medals from the National Gymnastics Championships, which were held in Sydney last week.

Success was spread throughout all levels of competition at the Sports Center in Homebush Olympic Park, with multiple podium finishes from our WAIS athletes.

Senior gymnast and 2008 Beijing Olympian Olivia Vivian defended her Un-even bars title and posted a difficulty score of 6.3 which was highest of the senior competition.

Junior international WAIS athlete Darcy Norman placed first on the Un-even bars while Franceska Fusha won the Beam and finished third in the All-Around.

In the International development program level 10, Paige James placed first on the Un-even bars as Aya Meggs took the Beam title and placed second in the All-Around.

“The competition was a good replication of the girls training and an important learning experience for the younger gymnasts,” explained WAIS coach Nikolai Lapchine.

“It was good to see girls from all states trying to up their difficulty level and although routines aren’t perfect yet, it’s a step in the right direction for Australian Gymnastics,” Vivian said.

WAIS Juniors; Paige James, Yasmin Collier, Darcy Norman and Aya Meggs will all be travelling to America this upcoming Friday for a National Training Camp while Olivia Vivian awaits the announcement of a possible World Championship selection.
