WAIS Gymnasts Win Medals in Canada

WAIS-AIS gymnasts have taken away a clutch of medals at the recent Gymnix International Competition in Canada.

Headlining the Australian charge was Lauren Mitchell – who claimed gold medals in the beam and floor Senior Cup Finals, whilst Emily Little starred with top billing in the vault final. Fellow WAIS scholarship holder Georgia Simpson claimed a bronze medal in the un-even bars final.

Mitchell displayed plenty of her usual flair in winning both the beam and floor routines. She first took to the beam, running through a solid repertoire to accumulate a winning score of 14.100, with her WAIS training partner Emily Little picked up silver with a score of 13.750.

The silver was Little’s second Gymnix podium visit, having earlier taken top step after scoring 14.750 to win the vault – her pet event. Mitchell was third with a 13.900 score.

Mitchell later went on to claim her second gold of the meet with a world class display on floor, an apparatus in which she has held world champion status. Mitchell scored 15.150 and showed she would again be in the medal mix at this year’s pinnacle event – the 2012 London Olympic Games. Emily Little (13.350) rounded out a very successful personal campaign, with a bronze medal taking her personal tally to three.

Georgia Simpson also added a podium finish for the WAIS representatives with a bronze medal on bars, returning a score of 11.900.

Earlier in the competition, a fourth WAIS gymnast recorded a medal winning performance, with Nikki Chung winning silver on the un-even bars in the Senior Challenge. Chung’s performance was part of a medal winning trifecta for Australia, with fellow Australian competitors Larissa Miller (first) and Georgia Rose Brown (third) rounding out a comprehensive performance from the Australian group.

There will be more international gymnastics action for three members of the senior WAIS international group, with Lauren Mitchell, Emily Little and Georgia Simpson all competing in the Pacific Rim tournament in the USA.
