Nigel Barley will compete in his first Paralympics at the age of 37

The Australian Paralympic Committee (APC) has today announced WA athlete Nigel Barley as part of the 15-member Australian Cycling Team for the London Paralympics.

The 37 year-old hand cyclist will make his Paralympic debut in London in the road race and road time trial.

The WAIS scholarship holder took up cycling after breaking his back in a work accident as a 26 year-old. Barley is a seven time Australian hand cycling champion and in 2011 won silver and bronze medals at the UCI Para-Cycling Road World Cup.

The Parkerville resident lists his greatest moment as covering the 4,437km from Perth to Sydney on his hand cycle.

The London Paralympic Games will take place from 29 August through to 9 September, 2012.

Barley’s selection sees him as WA’s sixth officially selected athlete for the 2012 London Paralympics.
