WAIS BMX athletes had a turbulent time at the 2009 UCI BMX World Championships in Adelaide last weekend.

Both Nicole Callisto in the Elite women’s and Lauren Reynolds in the Elite junior women’s finals suffered crashes, which dashed hopes of medals.

Callisto – who represented Australia at last year’s Olympic Games – crashed attempting to round a corner. Callisto was able to resume, but finished in seventh place with Sarah Walker (NZ), Eva Ailloud (FRA) and Arielle Martin (USA) taking the medals.

Reynolds fell victim to a similar fate, but was unfortunately unable to complete the race. Columbian Mariana Pajon won the Elite junior title with the Dutch pair of Merle van Benthem and Maartje Hereijgers claiming the minor medals.
