Two WAIS Individual Athlete Support Program scholarship holders have been selected into the Gymnastics Australia squad for the up coming Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships to be held in Japan in September.

WAIS athletes Chloe Hayes (Mosman Park) and Janine Murray (Claremont) will join Naazmi Johnston and Danielle Prince in the four member squad for the World Championships with Hayes’ coach Jo Edinger also selected to travel with the squad.

The squad was selected following the 2009 national championships, which were held in Brisbane earlier in the year. Murray submitted an injury petition and was granted a performance trial in Perth in July after missing the national championships with an ankle injury.

Gymnastics Australia’s Rhythmic Gymnastics program manager Karon Williams, is pleased with the team selected and is looking forward to getting some quality competition experience into some young gymnasts.

“We are really proud of the four girls selected in the team for the World Championships. Naazmi will be a great leader for the team and provide some great competition experience and the experience of competing in their first major international competition will be invaluable for the other three girls,” Williams said.

“This year’s world championship is being used as preparation and experience leading up to the Commonwealth Games in 2010.”

“We believe the four girls will work really well together and get the best possible result for their country.”

The squad will now finalise preparations for the World Championships which will be held in Mie, Japan from 7-13 September 2009.
