
The Western Australian Institute of Sport will this week crown its 2013 WAIS Athlete of the Year at its Annual Dinner at Challenge Stadium in front of over 450 guests.
The 2013 WAIS Annual Dinner will celebrate the achievements of its athletes and staff, whilst also celebrating a new induction in to the Western Australian Hall of Champions, with a sixth member of its illustrious rank, set for elevation to legend status.
The most coveted award of the night – the WAIS Athlete of the Year – has again drawn an impressive list of candidates, with a large group of WAIS athletes representing Australia with great distinction over the 12 month voting period from 1 Oct 2012 – 30 Sep 2013.
The nominees for the award are as follows:
- Kim Mickle (Athletics)
- Melissa Hoskins (Cycling)
- Cameron Meyer (Cycling)
- Lauren Reynolds (BMX)
- Katherine Downie (Swimming)
- Brad Scott (Athletics)
- Glencora McGhie (Water Polo)
- Zoe Arancini (Water Polo)
- Madison de Rozario (Athletics)
- Ashleigh Nelson (Hockey)
The first award of the evening is the WAIS Athlete Career and Education Excellence Award that recognises the academic or professional accomplishments within an athlete’s career path while maintaining focus and commitment in their chosen sport.
The nominations for this award are as follows:
- Jesse Phillips and Stephen Bird (Canoeing)
- Nathan McGuire (Hockey)
- Nikki Chung (Gymnastics)
The WAIS Junior Athlete of the Year has again fetched a high quality pool of talent, with multiple world champions vying for the title. The nominees for the 2013 award are as follows:
- Carrie Smith and Ella Clark (Sailing)
- Sam Welsford (Cycling)
- Tian Beckett (Cycling)
- George Ford (Water Polo)
- Jessica Zimmerman (Water Polo)
- Alex Hagan and Hannah Vermeersch (Rowing)
Two major awards have been added to the Annual Dinner program in 2013, with the WAIS Program and WAIS Coach of the Year Awards, both to be presented on the night.
The WAIS Program of the Year, values the Program that best exhibits excellence in the areas of: Athlete Outcomes, promoting WAIS Values, a targeted multidisciplinary approach and through its outstanding contribution to WAIS image.
This year’s nominees are as follows:
- Canoeing
- Gymnastics
- Women’s Water Polo
- Men’s Water Polo
The WAIS Coach of the Year will be presented to the coach that best reflects over the past 12 months, a criteria of excellence that includes; Achieving World Class Performance, meeting KRA Targets, upholding WAIS Values in coaching and whose overall contribution makes the most significant impact to WAIS operations.
The 2013 nominees for the WAIS Coach of the Year are as follows:
