WAIS athlete Jessica Moore has come away with a runners up medal from the Malaysian Open doubles final over the weekend after losing in three sets to Dinara Safina and Galina Voskoboeva 7-5 6-2 10-5 on centre court.
Moore partnered Thailand’s Noppawan Lertcheewakarn in the event and looked primed for an upset after the pair took the second set off the fifth ranked and highly rated partnership.
Safina and Voskoboeva proved too strong in the final set however, as the new combination of Moore and Lertcheewakarn failed to match the power of the more experienced pair.
Safina – who is a former singles world number one and younger sister of Grand Slam winner Marat Safin – in particular showed her class with some big hitting from the baseline.
Moore claimed the WTA event final was a real highlight and felt they had given a good account of themselves against quality opposition.
“We we’re really close and almost had them, but it was an unreal experience on centre court of such a big tournament,” Moore said.
