Scott Sunderland - after winning gold in Glasgow

Three WAIS cyclists have earned call ups for the Australian Track Cycling team set to compete at the Oceania Championships in Invercargill from October 8-11.

2014 WAIS Junior Athlete of the Year Sam Welsford will be joined by Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medallist Scott Sunderland and track world cup representative Elisa Wundersitz, with all three, members of the Australian endurance squad.

Welsford and Wundersitz are likely to compete in the men’s and women’s team pursuits respectively, whilst Sunderland is likely to tackle the bunch races.

Sunderland heads back to the track following an excellent season on the National Road Series circuit that has seen the 2012 London Olympian earn several stage wins for his Budget Forklifts team.

Sunderland competed at the London Games as a member of the Australian men’s team sprint, with the boys finishing fourth overall. He has since switched his focus to endurance events, despite making a cameo return to sprint at last year’s Commonwealth Games, where he defended his title in the men’s kilo.

Evidence of his sprint pedigree remains, with the South Australian based cyclist producing some blistering stage finishes on the road this year.

The Australian track squad for the Oceania Champs will also be bolstered by Olympic legend Anna Meares, who will compete in the women’s sprint events. Meares is an 11 time track world champion and dual Olympic gold medallist.
