Western Australian volleyball athlete Luke Smith has been selected by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Smith was included in the Volleyroos 12 man squad and will make his Olympic debut in London, whilst the Australian men’s team will appear at Olympic level for the first time since the Athens 2004.

Born in Jakarta, Smith stands at 204cm and only made his international debut for Australia last year in a match against Thailand. Such is the 21 year-old’s ability, he now holds 30 caps for his country.

The Volleyroos sensationally knocked off five higher ranked teams to qualify for London, and coach Jon Uriarte is predicting a bright future for the team and sport.

“I think we have such an ambitious group that is improving day after day. This team has amazing potential and they are nowhere near the heights they could reach,” Uriarte said.

“We are heading to London looking to crash the parties of some of the higher ranked teams while knowing that in next four and eight year blocks this team could do something really special, really important for the sport in Australia.”
