Welsford Set to Race in Rainbow

Published On: 4 April 2019

Sam Welsford will ride the scratch race on Friday in his newly minted world champion rainbow jersey as the 2019 Australian Track Championships take place in Brisbane.

Welsford provided one of the standout individual highlights at this year’s Track World Championships in Denmark when he produced a stunning surge to the line for the rainbow bands, less than an hour after he’d anchored the men’s team pursuit squad to a gold medal in world record time.

In Brisbane, he will reprise his scratch race heroics before shifting to the madcap and mayhem of the points race, which will take centre stage on Saturday amongst a high quality field.

With the championships having commenced on Wednesday, day one of competition saw recent senior team debutant Matthew Richardson achieve a career-first sub 10 second effort in the individual sprint.

Richardson has advanced to the quarter finals after winning his round of 16 head to head with Jackson Williams. Richardson’s qualifying time of 9.995sec was fourth fastest overall.

In the U19 women’s scratch race, Dharlia Haines earned a fourth place finish, with the event won by new national champion Ella Sibley.

In the U19 men’s individual pursuit, Oliver Bleddyen has qualified for the bronze medal ride-off with SA’s Angus Miller.
