Western Australian Swimmers Finish Up in the Pool

Guy Harrison-Murray, Madeleine Scott and Jeremy McClure have recorded solid finishes in their final races of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, on competition day eight.

Overnight (WST) Guy Harrison-Murray competed in the Men’s S10 400m Freestyle event.

After finishing in third place in his heat, with a time of 4:11.54, Harrison-Murray earned his place in the finals as the fifth fastest qualifier.

Almost one second behind his nearest competitor Guy was going to have to pull out a big performance to earn his first ever Paralympic medal.

As the final race began it was clear that nobody was going to take the race easy with the top swimmers shaving up to 13 seconds off their qualifying times at the races conclusion. 

Harrison-Murray produced a swim which was consistent with his qualifier, finishing in 4:11.18.

Unfortunately this was not enough to contest in the finals field and he finished in eighth place.

The winner of the event was Ukrainian Maksym Krypak, whose swim broke both the World and Paralympic records.

He was the only competitor to finish the race in less than four minutes, recording a time of 3:57.71.

Madeleine Scott made it all the way to the finals of her final event, the Women’s S9 100m Butterfly.

Competing in heat three, Scott earned a third place finish and time of 1:10.96.

This time qualified her as the seventh fastest swimmer heading into finals and gave her a lane one starting position.

Like Harrison-Murray in his final, Scott’s time in the final was consistent with that which she qualified with.

She completed the race in 1:10.85 and in seventh position. 

Jeremy McClure is Western Australia’s last swimmer who competed on day eight, participating in the Men’s S11 100m Freestyle event. 

McClure competed in heat one of the qualification round, swimming out of lane seven.

He finished in sixth place in his heat, unfortunately missing out on a finals appearance. 

In finishing his swim he recorded a time of 1:06.72.

All three swimmers have competed in a number of events at this years Paralympics with success. 

Guy Harrison-Murray and Madeleine Scott, in particular, have come away with several brilliant

performances being Paralympic debutants.
