Kat Downie and her coach Paul Bruce were both award winners at the 2014 Wheelchair Sports WA Awards

Wheelchair Sports WA celebrated their 2014 Sports Star Awards last weekend at the Rendezvous Grand Hotel in Scarborough with world champion wheelchair basketball athlete Shaun Norris claiming the top award.

WAIS athlete Norris helped guide the Australian Rollers to a second consecutive world championship title in Korea this year, with Norris named tournament MVP, to go with a position in the tournament all star five.

Norris’ campaign earned him the Wheelchair Sports WA Sports Star of the Year Award, with his domestic side, the Perth Wheelcats, named Team of the Year, following their national championship win in 2014.

Another WAIS athlete in Katherine Downie was honoured for her 2014 form, with the Junior Sports Star of the Year Award. Downie won medals at Commonwealth, Para Pan Pac and national championship level at both long and short course formats.

Downie’s coach Paul Bruce, received the Coach of the Year Award, for his efforts in assisting Downie to her remarkable 2014 feats.

Australian Gliders wheelchair basketball representative Amber Merritt was bestowed the Western Stars MVP Award, following her outstanding campaign across the national league season.
